Abstract:
Absorptive capacity is an important ability for firms seeking to adapt to dynamic environments and maintain competitive advantage. While the importance of absorptive capacity is well-documented, its multidimensional nature poses challenges for measurement. Existing methods often fail to comprehensively capture its core dimensions, namely acquisition, assimilation, transformation, and exploitation of external knowledge. This study addresses these limitations by introducing a novel measurement approach based on historical website data and advanced text analysis techniques. The novel approach is substantiated by a validated keyword dictionary and the utilisation of Large Language Models (LLMs). The multiple dimensions are operationalised through the utilisation of longitudinal data from firms' websites, with the use of website content as a source of information being a salient feature of this study. Details pertaining to R&D activities, collaborations, and innovation efforts are of particular relevance. The validity and reliability of the text-based indicator are established through comparisons with established proxies and inter-model reliability tests. The data for the study were collected from the Dafne database and the Common Crawl Internet Archive, covering the period from 2008 to 2024. This approach provides a more dynamic and comprehensive tool for measuring absorptive capacity, overcoming the limitations of traditional methods.
