This work shows a small section of the large application range of metal oxides. On the one hand, it illustrates the properties of cobalt oxide and chromium titanium oxide (CTO) as gas sensitive films in work function and conductivity type transducers. On the other hand, it shows, how the well conducting and transparent indium tin oxide (ITO) can be integrated as a gate in a photo-FET to an optical gas sensor which transforms the variation of light intensity to an electrical signal which, in turn, is immediately amplified by the FET. The work function measurements were performed with a Kelvin probe and a GasFET. The later in the form of a Hybrid Suspended Gate FET (HSGFET). For the conductivity measurements a structure of interdigital contacts (IDC) on oxidized silicon was used. The effect of humidity on the HSGFET was investigated. A model was developed which explains this effect and which equally holds for the Floating Gate FET (FGFET). Humidity leads to adsorption of water on the surface of the FET and to the formation of a water film which enables the transportation of charge carriers. The consequence is a signal drift of the GasFET. It was demonstrated, that high temperatures of operation suppress the drift because the carriers are immobilized due to lack of water. At room temperature, it was possible to control the transportation process by a guard-ring and even the FET itself. In particular, the guard-ring helped to minimize the surface transportation of charge carriers and hence to stabilize the signal base-line. First signs of electro-chemical processes occuring at the guard-ring were obeserved. For the first time, the signal contribution of the passivation layer of the FET to gas adsorption was determined. A model was developed which describes the influence of temperature on the electrical characteristics of both types of GasFETs. In particular, the existence of an isothermal point was shown at which the thermal drift becomes minimal.
