The use of oxygen storage materials (OSMs) to supply oxygen for oxy-fuel combustion represents a promising approach for carbon capture. This qualitative proof-of-concept study investigates a process related to chemical looping with oxygen uncoupling (CLOU) using calcium-strontium-iron-manganese (CSFM)-type non-stoichiometric perovskite OSM mini-honeycombs in a small-scale packed bed reactor at atmospheric pressure. After preheating with a McKenna flat-flame burner, the stationary bed was alternately exposed to air and undiluted propane or methane without an intermediate purge or continuous external heating. Oxygen storage during charging is exothermic, whereas oxygen release during discharging is endothermic; simultaneous fuel combustion nevertheless produced a positive packed bed temperature response during both phases. The effects of starting temperature, fuel type, cyclic air–fuel ratio, volume flow rates, and phase durations were evaluated using packed bed temperature measurements and exhaust-gas analysis. Propane and methane exhibited opposing starting-temperature trends under the selected conditions: the effective test duration decreased with increasing starting temperature for propane but increased for methane, demonstrating the need for fuel-specific cyclic parameters. Sustained cyclic operation exceeding 50 min was achieved with propane. However, carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons indicated incomplete fuel conversion, and a carbon dioxide-rich exhaust gas was not achieved. Because the total outlet flow was not measured, the temperature responses and exhaust gas concentrations are interpreted as comparative indicators rather than quantitative performance metrics. Overall, the results demonstrate the feasibility of short-cycle CLOU-related operation with stationary CSFM mini-honeycombs and undiluted propane while identifying empirical parameter ranges associated with the observed thermal response.
