Abstract:
Low-carbon cementitious systems currently rely on various supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) such as fly ash, blast furnace slag, calcined clays, or filler materials such as limestone in various quantities, regulated by e. g. DIN EN 197-1 (DIN EN 197-1, 2011). This selection can be expanded by the use of recycled materials as e. g. fines from the demolition of concrete structures. The cement standard DIN EN 197-6 provides the framework for the incorporation of said recycled materials (DIN EN 197-6, 2023, S. 6). Recycled concrete fines provide the additional possibility to capture carbon dioxide by carbonation, enabling a further improvement of the CO2 footprint. In general, the process of wet and dry carbonation is well understood, and a number of publications present findings on the properties of different materials at the microscopic scale. By nature, the focus of these investigations is on small-scale batches (Jiang et al., 2022), and they often use sophisticated laboratory equipment such as gloveboxes or high-pressure atmospheres (Gholizadeh-Vayghan & Snellings, 2022). When the focus shifts from the investigation of material properties themselves to the use of the product in mortar and concrete tests, there is a need for a practical and economical approach to carbonating larger quantities of material. This enables especially the participation of less well-resourced or smaller laboratories in the development of this scientific field. This paper presents a brief preview of the results of a proposed laboratory test programme to develop a fast and cost-effective carbonation method of recycled concrete powder.
