Calcined clays are a potential source of cementitious material (SCM). The physicochemical characteristics of the amorphous phase depend on the type of clay and consequently also its pozzolanic activity. The objective of this work is to evaluate the influence of the physicochemical properties of the amorphous phase on the performance of concretes elaborated with 25{%} calcined clay as SCM. We worked with two clays with a medium content of clay mineral (kaolinite and illite) and quartz as the main impurity. The clays were thermally and mechanically activated, then characterized by FTIR, laser granulometry, Blaine specific surface and water demand. It produced concretes and their mechanical behaviour was evaluated at 2, 7 and 28 days. From the results obtained, it can be deduced that the physicochemical properties of the amorphous phase of both kaolinitic and illitic clays contribute to performance of the elaborated concretes, making their use as SCM feasible.
